DR and DA Plans Share These Basic Characteristics:

  1. Dental Direct Reimbursement and Assignment plans are not dental insurance or a discounted dental plan, it is a self-funded dental benefit.
  2. There are no networks of providers with Dental Direct Reimbursement and Assignment, employees can visit the dentist of their choice.
  3. Since DR/DA is not insurance there are no monthly premium payments, however, monthly funding amounts for your plan will be suggested. These payments may look like premiums, however, it is important to remember that this money is used to reimburse employees when they receive dental care and that any excess funds at the end of the plan year are retained by the employer.
  4. Stop-loss insurance (to prevent paying out more in claims than predicted) is available should your company wish to purchase it.

Dental Direct Reimbursement

Direct Reimbursement (DR) dental benefits are simple to understand and to use.   With a DR plan in place, employees simply visit the dentist of their choice, receive the necessary treatment and pay the dental office at the time of their visit. Then they will submit to you, their employer, for reimbursement based on the plan design (if the plan is self-administered) or they will submit to the plan administrator if your firm decides to use a TPA. Employees will be reimbursed based on the schedule determined by you, the employer. All reimbursements are made based on dollars spent, not on the type of procedure as with typical insured plans.

Dental Direct Assignment
Direct Assignment (DA) has all of the same benefits of Dental Direct Reimbursement and also eliminates the need for employees to pay for dental expenses up front.   The DA concept was developed after some employers voiced concern about their employees having to pay out-of-pocket for all of their dental expenses and then receiving reimbursement.

Although reimbursements are processed bi-weekly by Benefits Administration, Inc. and typically will reach employees within a week of their dental visit, Dental Direct Assignment plans eliminate this concern.

With DA, your employee will receive a dental benefit card that they will present when they visit the dental office. The dental office will then collect the amount due from the employee and submit to the plan administrator for reimbursement for the amount of benefit covered by the plan.
